Current-Year Requests
For a request submitted 15 or fewer calendar days before the first day of instruction for the school year, the district will issue a final decision within 30 calendar days of receiving the request.
Interdistrict transfers allow a student to attend a school district other than the district in which the student resides. Requests are subject to California law, applicable interdistrict attendance agreements, and Meridian Elementary School District policies.
If you live within the Meridian Elementary School District and would like your child to attend a school in another district, you must submit an interdistrict transfer request.
Before requesting a transfer, the Board encourages students and parents or guardians to learn about the programs available within the Meridian Elementary School District. A school site visit and a meeting with Superintendent Chris Meyer are required before an outgoing transfer application can be considered.
If you live outside the Meridian Elementary School District and would like your child to attend Meridian Elementary School, you must submit an interdistrict transfer request. A school site visit and a meeting with Superintendent Chris Meyer are required before an incoming transfer application can be considered.
You must also obtain approval from your district of residence.
An interdistrict transfer agreement must be approved by both the district of residence and the district of proposed enrollment before the transfer becomes valid.
Parents and guardians are responsible for meeting all timelines established by the school district. Failure to meet a required timeline may result in the transfer request being considered abandoned.
Under California Education Code Sections 46600.1 and 46600.2, the district will notify parents or guardians of its decision within the following timeframes:
For a request submitted 15 or fewer calendar days before the first day of instruction for the school year, the district will issue a final decision within 30 calendar days of receiving the request.
For a request submitted 16 or more calendar days before the first day of instruction, the district will issue a final decision as soon as possible, but no later than 14 calendar days after the first day of instruction for the school year in which the interdistrict transfer is requested.
An interdistrict transfer agreement may be approved for a term of up to five school years. Enrollment under an interdistrict transfer permit is subject to continued enrollment and the terms and conditions of the applicable interdistrict attendance agreement.
If a student leaves the school after an interdistrict transfer permit has been granted, the student may need to submit a new interdistrict transfer request before returning, as required by applicable law and district policy.
Once a student is admitted to a school under an interdistrict attendance permit, the student will not be required to reapply for an interdistrict transfer and may continue attending the school in which the student is enrolled, unless the interdistrict attendance agreement specifies different reapplication requirements or another exception under California law applies.
The following documents may be required as part of an interdistrict transfer request, depending on the reason for the request and the criteria established by the applicable interdistrict attendance agreement and district policy:
Additional documentation may be requested when necessary to support the reason for the transfer request.
The Superintendent or designee may approve an interdistrict attendance permit based on the reasons and conditions established in the applicable interdistrict attendance agreement and district policy.
The district's interdistrict attendance agreement and applicable policies establish the criteria and conditions under which an interdistrict transfer request may be approved or denied.
If an interdistrict transfer request is denied, the district will provide written notice of the denial and information regarding the parent's or guardian's right to appeal the decision to the County Board of Education having jurisdiction over the district of residence.
An appeal must generally be filed within 30 calendar days from the date of the final denial.
California law provides specific rights and priorities for certain interdistrict transfer requests. These may include applicable provisions for students who are victims of bullying and students who are children of active-duty military parents or guardians.
Requests involving these circumstances will be considered in accordance with applicable California Education Code requirements.
You may submit a completed interdistrict transfer request in person, by email, or by mail.
